Objective:
The main purpose of the centre is to reconstruct New Idea and New Perspective of Mosque Architecture and Islamic Design from the Islamic Values and Program Development.

Background

After the end Modern Architecture Era marked by the demolition of housing apartment at Pruit-Igoe design by Minoru Yamasaki at 1972, there is a large revolution happened in Architecture history. The failure of Pruit-Igoe is Architecture product which teaches most of the architect that building is not only a pigeon hole for the people to live in.

Dramatic and radical approaches of Modern Architecture who reject history and cultural symbol have showed its failure to produce suitable spaces for specific races which is African-American to live and be part of American citizen. After long and exhausted attempt to redevelop and refurbish this award winning building, nothing is working until finally it was demolished and change into another spaces.

From this rejection of approaches by Modern Architecture, the world of design approaches in Architecture has reach the era that Charles Jencks call as Post-Modern Architecture. Beside the rejection of Modern Architecture, Jencks highlight the importance of language and symbol in architectural elements. Post-Modern architecture tries to bring architecture from the knowledge of post and beam of building functionalist into a new set of language complete with its own metaphor, syntax and its own words.

Beside the born of Post Modern Architecture as stated above, mid of 20th century also become witness of the new movement which later known as regionalism as a reaction of a floating design of International style. This regionalism approached voiced by Alexander Tzonist and some architect like Hassan Fathy and Geoffrey Bawa and Jimmy Lim in Malaysia bring awareness on the importance of site, cultural context and local construction technology into the vocabulary of design.

The development of the mosques typology in term of architectural language on the other hand is extremely slow. Like overall theory and framework of Islamic Architecture, the language and typology of the mosques in the world at the early of 20th century is mostly influence by historical and archeological writing of KAC Cresswell, Sir Banister Fletcher and Thomas Furgeson. This type of writing is developing their theory and framework from the physical legacy of Moslem people without detail and deep discourse on the architectural language, judicial framework, and regional need. Only after the set-up of Aga Khan and Arabo-Islamist movement this three (3) sensitive and important issues is being discussed, challenge and construct.

Even though most of the modern mosques design is highly influence by classical and historical approaches represent by El-Wakil design which proposed the idea of Middle Eastern architectural language, there are some design who try to speak in the different language. Series of ISNA mosques design by Gulzar Haider and some mosque in Pakistan design by Vledat Dalokay or some mosques in Iran has bring the geist of Modern Architecture through their modern and geometric language.

Some unique design like the one design by Basil al bayati try to highlight the importance of metaphor and symbol in the language of mosques, while some metaphysic and expressionism approaches from person like Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Oleg grabar, Titus Burkhardt and Nader Ardalan try to redefine the need oh faithful spaces inside the mosque. Another importance mosque design is the primitive regionalism approaches by Dr Hassan Fathy. His design is not only talked about the use of local language but also local approaches and construction methods.

Similar scenario also happened in Southeast Asia. Even though mosques design is highly influenced by Middle-Eastern language, some design like series of modern approaches mosque by Achmad Noe’man and Frederich Silaban in Indonesia and also Ivor Shipley’s design of Masjid Negara in Malaysia has set different framework to portray mosques design in these two countries. Beside that some regionalist and local language like housing and development mosque in Singapore, Said Naum and Ukhuwah Islamiyah Mosque in Indonesia and also ASPA mosque by Jimmy Lim in Pahang Malaysia has bring the importance of regional culture and architectural language into the picture. This centre will try to reconstruct the idea of mosque architecture from the perspective of value and program development not just its physical development.
